FOCUS Hispanic Center for Community Development, Inc. is collaborating withBroadway Elementary School, Sussex Avenue School, Thirteenth Avenue School, and Maria Varisco-Rogers Charter Schoolin Newark to operate their 21st Century Community Learning Centers.   The centers operate Monday–Friday 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm during the school year, and 9:00am to 1:00 pm for four weeks during the summer. The Centers offer the students the academic enrichment activities needed to enhance and attain the skills necessary to meet New Jersey’s Core Curriculum Content Standards. It offers students character building, academic enrichment, arts and music education, recreational activities, and remediation opportunities that complement the regular school day.  Literacy and other educational services are also offered to the families of participating students. These activities include: Family Literacy Programs, opportunities for GED completion, access to FOCUS’ Essex County College Extension Center, Adult Basic Education Classes, Civics/ESL classes, English-as-a Second Language classes, New Jersey Department of Labor One Stop Services, social service assistance, and senior citizens programs. These centers enhance family stability that lead to the improvement of student academic and social achievement.
