New Jersey Grade 4 and Grade 8 Results [2011]

Grade 4:

  • New Jersey fourth-graders had an average scale score (231) that was higher than the nation (220), and all other states except Massachusetts (237).  New Jersey fourth-graders performed similarly to their counterparts in Maryland and New Hampshire.
  • In 2011, the average scale score for New Jersey fourth-graders (231) was significantly higher than the average scale score in 2005 (223) and 2003 (225), but was not significantly different from the score (229) in 2009.
  • A greater percentage of lunch-eligible fourth-graders were at or above proficient in 2011 (23 percent) as compared to those in 2009 (17 percent).
  • In 2011, the -25 points performance gap between lunch eligible and non-eligible fourth-graders did not differ from the -30 points performance gap in 2003.  Similarly, the -23 points White/Black and the -23 points White/Hispanic performance gaps did not differ from their respective gaps in 2003.

Grade 8:

  • New Jersey eighth-graders had an average scale score (275) that did not differ from four other states (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, and Vermont).  New Jersey and these four states out-performed the nation (283) and all others.
  • In 2011, the average scale score for New Jersey eighth-graders (275) was higher than in 2007 (270), 2005 (269) and 2003 (268), but not significantly different from the score (273) in 2009.
  • New Jersey female eighth-graders had an average scale score (280) that was significantly higher than the male eighth –graders (270).
  • In 2011, the -28 points performance gap between lunch eligible and non-eligible eight-graders did not differ from the -30 points performance gap in 2003.  Similarly, the -28 points White/Black and the -27 points White/Hispanic performance gaps did not differ from their respective gaps in 2003.
