National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan, and nongovernmental organization governed by a board of directors, the majority of whom are classroom teachers.  It was formed in 1987 to advance the quality of teaching and learning by developing professional standards for accomplished teaching, creating a voluntary system to certify teachers who meet those standards and integrating certified teachers into educational reform efforts.    More information about National Board for Professional Teaching Standards can be accessed at

National Board Certification, developed for teachers by teachers, signifies that a teacher or school counselor is accomplished, having met challenging professional standards as evidenced by performance-based assessments. A cadre of specially trained teachers rates the performance assessments.   A question and answer guide has been prepared for teachers and other educators  by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards to help explain in more detail about National Board Certification.

National Board Certified Teachers attest to the fact that the experience has allowed them to reflect and improve on their teaching practice and to implement change in the classroom that foster high academic achievement and participation in their students.

National Board Certification is part of the growing education reform movement that is advancing student learning, improving teaching and making schools better. Teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met high standards through study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review.  It is a rewarding professional development program for teachers and school counselors.

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards requires that candidates be experienced teachers or school counselors (3 years minimum) with a valid teaching/school counselor license, voluntarily seeking recognition for meeting rigorous standards in one of twenty-five certificate areas defined by subject and students' development level.

A National Board Certificate is valid for ten years and is renewable.

The federal government instituted a program in 1997 to provide financial assistance to individuals wishing to seek certification through the National Boards for Professional Teaching Standards. The program was called the National Board Certification Fee Subsidy Program. This program provided up to one-half of the fees required for National Board Certification. At this time, the total cost of the National Board Certification process is $2,500. Unfortunately, federal funds are no longer available to pay for up to $1,250 of the total fees for a candidate who meets the eligibility requirements.

Therefore, a candidate may want to check out the National Board Scholarship Program to receive information about various other funding options.  First-Time and Retake candidates in New Jersey may be eligible for a Chase scholarship if they teach in a school that has a free and reduced lunch rate greater than fifty percent.   Please contact the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards at 1-800-22TEACH (1-800-228-3224) for more scholarship information.

In order to receive any candidate scholarship funding, the individual must first read all the eligibility requirements and policies in order to submit an enrollment application for the National Teacher Certification program. A nonrefundable $65 processing charge is required when a candidate submits the enrollment application. However, candidacy will not officially start until the nonrefundable $500 initial fee is submitted to National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, which will be applied to the $2,500 assessment fee.
