2010 New Jersey STATE FINALISTS
Deirdre Brown has taught mathematics at Trenton Central High School for the past 9 years. Previously, she taught at Grice Middle School in Hamilton, New Jersey for 3 years. She created the math curriculum for the G9 Academy Summer Program for incoming ninth graders in order to promote their academic success at Trenton Central High School. Additionally, she created and implemented the math tutoring program for the juniors and seniors who did not pass the HSPA (High School Proficiency Assessment) and/or AHSA (Alternative High School Assessment). Deirdre is currently teaching Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB, and Advanced Mathematics/Trigonometry. During the 2010 -2011 school year, she was honored as the Teacher of the Year for Trenton Central High School. During the summer, she is teaching high school students in the Princeton University Preparatory Program (PUPP).
Deirdre is very committed to her students and education. She creates a classroom environment of respect, fun and good rapport. She gives weekly student assessments in order to allow students the chance to evaluate how well they grasp the material. She makes learning fun by playing math review games and relating the mathematics to real life. She is always researching new ways to teach mathematics in order to connect with her students and make the material relevant. She is taking online courses at Cappella University in pursuit of a Masters in K-12 Education which is giving her some professional development ideas that she is implementing in her classes and sharing with her peers. She also voluntarily mentors other teachers by sharing her instructional strategies, philosophies, experience and materials in order to be a part of helping the students and teachers fulfill their academic and professional destinies.
Deirdre has a B.A. in Mathematics Education from The College of New Jersey (formerly known as Trenton State College). She is certified to teach K-12 mathematics in New Jersey.
