2012 PRESIDENTIAL AWARDS
New Jersey STATE FINALISTS

Elementary Science
Jeanette Scillieri

Jeanette ScillieriJeanette teaches 6th Grade Science and an Environmental Technology class at the Leonia Middle School in Leonia, New Jersey.  She has been teaching in the Leonia School district for 10 years.  Her hands-on, inquiry-based approach to science captivates and inspires each young person who walks through her classroom door.  She has a passion for children and science, and feels like the luckiest person in the world to be able to combine both of these into one career.  Jeanette believes that students have a natural desire to question, experiment and learn.  She promotes critical thinking and fosters a love for learning by creating a fun and nurturing environment in her science classroom. “When children discover something new and I see the excitement in their faces and watch their eyes light up…that is truly the most rewarding experience for me!”

Jeanette is an active member of the Leonia Professional Development Team and promotes Science and Technology in the Leonia Middle School by organizing a variety of school-sponsored events, including the annual Science Fair.   She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Montclair State University, a K-8 teaching certification from Ramapo College and she received additional credits in Science from Rutgers University.  Jeanette was awarded the Bergen County Teacher Recognition Certificate of Commendation and was the recipient of the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2007.

“We all want to make a positive difference in our communities.  I cannot think of any better way to do this than to teach and guide our children…our future.”
