Program Overview

DESCRIPTION

The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) invites county offices of education, school districts, and charter schools to participate in the New Jersey Teacher of the Year Program for the 2014-15 school year. This program highlights educational innovation, student learning, and the rewards of teaching. Further, the program attracts public attention to the positive aspects of our educational system.

A focus on teacher quality, recruitment, and retention is seen on every educational agenda in the state. The Teacher of the Year program recognizes and honors the contributions of outstanding classroom teacher leaders (pre-K through grade 12) who possess a special talent for inspiring a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities. 

SELECTION PROCESS

Phase I: School Teacher of the Year

Principal/School Leader selects a teacher leader to serve as School Teacher of the Year – deadline December 13, 2013.  Each School Teacher of the Year fills out a mini-application (Sections I-IV only) – deadline January 13, 2014.

Phase II: District Teacher of the Year

All School Teacher of the Year mini-application forms are submitted to the district superintendent's office - deadline January 13, 2014, which then selects a District Teacher of the Year – deadline February 7, 2014.  Superintendents enter their District Teacher of the Year information on the District Teacher of the Year Online Form - new procedure – deadline February 14, 2014.

Phase III: County Teacher of the Year

Each District Teacher of the Year receives a special email invitation from the NJDOE to compete for the distinguished title of County Teacher of the Year – deadline February 21, 2014.  The District Teacher of the Year completes the rest of the application (Sections I-IX) and district officials send the application and District Information Form to the respective County Office of Education to compete for selection as the County Teacher of the Year – deadline March 7, 2014.

Phase IV: State Teacher of the Year

Each County Office of Education submits their County Teacher of the Year application for eligibility review to the NJDOE – deadline April 11, 2014.  NJDOE will email each County Teacher of the Year with instructions on their 15-minute DVD – deadline April 22, 2014.  County Teachers of the Year must submit a 15-minute DVD to the NJDOE – deadline     May 23, 2014.  An independent panel of esteemed educators reviews the written application and video to determine up to 5 finalists for an in-person interview – deadline August 21, 2014.  After the interview stage, the panel selects the State Teacher of the Year.

Phase V: National Teacher of the Year

The individual selected as New Jersey State Teacher of the Year becomes the state's nominee for National Teacher of the Year.
