The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS) were adopted by the State Board of Education in 1996. The standards provided local school districts with benchmarks regarding what students should know and be able to do in nine content areas -- visual and performing arts, comprehensive health and physical education, science, social studies, world languages, technology, 21st-century life and careers, mathematics and language arts literacy.
In 2009, the NJCCCS were revised by taskforces of educators with expertise in their respective content areas. Each taskforce revised the standards and cumulative progress indicators to align with the knowledge and skills students needed for post-secondary education and the workplace.
In June 2010, the New Jersey State Board of Education and the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English language arts and mathematics. The CCSS were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and national experts to provide clear and consistent learning progressions designed to graduate all students ready for success in college and careers.
Model curricula have been developed for English language arts (K-12), mathematics (K-12), social studies (9-12) and science (9-12). Coming soon will be model curricula for visual and performing arts (K-12), world languages (K-12), and PE/Health (K-12). The model curricula are being developed to assist districts and schools with implementation of the Common Core State Standards and New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards by providing examples from which to work and/or products for implementation
While it is the responsibility of the state to provide standards that specify the learning outcomes for public education, it is the responsibility of local school districts to establish curricula and select materials aligned to the standards. Information regarding curricula and instruction can be found by contacting local boards of education.
