State Board of Education Names Ad Hoc Committee to Assist Department of Education in Review of Newark School District Finances

State Board of Education President Maud Dahme has appointed an ad hoc committee of the board to work with the Department of Education in its review of the finances of the Newark School District. Board member Thomas McGough was named as the chairman of the committee. Also named to the committee were board members Ron Butcher, the Vice President of the board and Orlando Edreira.

"The board is in full support of the Commissioner as we work jointly to resolve the Newark school district's financial situation," said board president Maud Dahme. "I am fully confident that Mr. McGough, Mr. Butcher and Mr. Edreira will make an important contribution to the process. We want to ensure that all of the resources that are allocated to the Newark School District are spent on quality education programs for children. We promise that we will do all we can to preserve those programs in the face of what are obviously serious problems in the Newark business office.

"I look forward to working closely with the State Board on this matter of extreme importance," said Commissioner of Education David Hespe. "My primary goal is to protect the programs and services received by the children of Newark. We are currently conducting an internal investigation of the situation to determine how Newark's finances could have fallen into such disarray and to determine what steps must be taken to ensure that something like this never happens again."
