"Martin Luther King Breakfast"

Who: A+ for Kids and NJ Watershed Ambassadors
What: AmeriCorps members, staff and community volunteers will provide a hot nutritional breakfast to over 300 people of the Trenton community. Members will also help with distribution of clothing and books that were collected from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection and 20 host agency offices. Entertainment will be provided.

Work at Four Trenton Locations in honor of Dr. King

Who: The Bonner Foundation/Bonner Leaders Program
What: AmeriCorps members and community volunteers will gather together as one group to remember Dr. King and then split into four service teams. The teams will work at four organizations in Trenton; painting, sorting through and organizing clothes donations, and discarding expired food items..

"Remembering MLK"

Who: Digital Divide – Union County College
What: Members will present a short play about Martin Luther King Jr, to children at the Boys and Girls Club. They will also distribute a time line of his life and contributions. In addition, the members will be soliciting donations of books from local merchants to be donated to the children in the club.

"Women’s Health Information"

"Martin Luther King Day Kick-Off to African American History Month"

Who: New Jersey Community Development Corporations (NJCDC) Community Leaders Program, Paterson Technology Corps., AmeriCorps VISTA, At-Risk Youth Mentoring Program, Great Falls Youth Build, Paterson YMCA, Pilgrimage Outreach Ministries Zone Program, and Garret Morgan Academy of Transportation and Technology.
What: NJCDC and their community partners, will put together a day of events which will carry into African American History Month. Martin Luther King Day will be the kick-off of a month-long series of events, which focus on Dr. King, his work and vision, and the importance of understanding diversity.
When and Where: Friday, January 17, 2003, Paterson YMCA Pre-School; AmeriCorps members and students from the Garret Morgan Academy will host a dance performance, an art lesson focused on diversity, and the telling of Dr. King’s story to 90 preschoolers. Call for times.

Monday, January 20, 2003, Paterson YMCA, Riverside Terrace Housing Development. AmeriCorps members and volunteers from the group’s Mentoring and YouthBuild Programs will host a day of activities for 120 Paterson children. Activities will include a culture room; a recreational segment, a dance performance; and an art project which will become a wall mosaic displaying thoughts of peace and equality.

Wednesday, February 5, 2003 and Friday February 28, Pilgrimage Outreach Ministries Zone Program , 449 Union Avenue

Americorps members and community partners will host a day of personal development training to 60 at-risk Paterson teens. Activities will include guest speakers who will highlight career opportunities, civil rights and human rights, and training in diversity, problem solving and conflict resolution.

There will also be poster, poetry and essay contest for both elementary and high school students throughout the city.

The MLK celebration will culminate with a celebration at the end of February at the Garret Morgan Academy. There will be an art exhibit of all entries for the contests run during the month. Contest winners will be announced and receive prizes. Details still to be confirmed. Call for additional information.

"Children Recreate Dr King’s Life"

"Tolerance and Diversity: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow"

Who: Cranford High School Social Studies Department
What: Grade 10 American History I students will create a three part project. Part I will be a history project related to tolerance and diversity. Part II will be a reflection on a selected reading dealing with tolerance and diversity in contemporary America, emphasizing the work of average people and their endeavors. Part III will be a service learning activity focusing on tolerance and diversity.
When: Kickoff is January 20. The event will take place during February and March. Students descriptions of all three completed parts, as well as reflections on their significance to the U.S., the community and the student, are to be submitted as a portfolio March 24.

"Creating an Environment Illustrating Martin Luther King’s Life"

Who: Haddon Heights High School Students
What: Students in CARE "Creating a Respectable Environment" are spearheading efforts to show ideas for activities that honor and promote Dr. King’s legaqcy and ideals. This includes putting up posters, a display, and a bulletin board asking students to list and describe what they will do to honor his work. Students have been asked to select at least one job or deed that they will do to assist in the community. Students also will be writing reflective essays about Dr. King and how they can carry out his work. In addition, several students will be assisting with a local community interfaith service.

This year’s theme will be the rights of children. Following the march, there will be a display of service opportunities for families. Participants will march from Church Square Park to Hoboken City Hall to spread King’s call to service.
