"Remembering MLK"

Monday, January 20, 2003, Paterson YMCA, Riverside Terrace Housing Development. AmeriCorps members and volunteers from the group’s Mentoring and YouthBuild Programs will host a day of activities for 120 Paterson children. Activities will include a culture room; a recreational segment, a dance performance; and an art project which will become a wall mosaic displaying thoughts of peace and equality. Time: 10:00 am-4:00 pm Wednesday, February 5, 2003 and Friday February 28, Pilgrimage Outreach Ministries Zone Program , 449 Union Avenue Americorps members and community partners will host a day of personal development training to 60 at-risk Paterson teens. Activities will include guest speakers who will highlight career opportunities, civil rights and human rights, and training in diversity, problem solving and conflict resolution. Time: 10:00 am- 1:45 pm; 2:00-5:45 pm There will also be poster, poetry and essay contest for both elementary and high school students throughout the city. The MLK celebration will culminate with a celebration at the end of February at the Garret Morgan Academy. There will be an art exhibit of all entries for the contests run during the month. "Tolerance and Diversity: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow"

| What: | Grade 10 American History I students will create a three part project. Part I will be a history project related to tolerance and diversity. Part II will be a reflection on a selected reading dealing with tolerance and diversity in contemporary America, emphasizing the work of average people and their endeavors. Part III will be a service learning activity focusing on tolerance and diversity. |

"Creating an Environment Illustrating Martin Luther King’s Life"

| What: | Students in CARE "Creating a Respectable Environment" are spearheading efforts to show ideas for activities that honor and promote Dr. King’s legaqcy and ideals. This includes putting up posters, a display, and a bulletin board asking students to list and describe what they will do to honor his work. Students have been asked to select at least one job or deed that they will do to assist in the community. Students also will be writing reflective essays about Dr. King and how they can carry out his work. In addition, several students will be assisting with a local community interfaith service. |
