DOE Lauds 109 Governors Awards in Arts Education Winners
The Department of Education (DOE), in conjunction with the Governor James E. McGreevey Administration, will proudly recognize today the 2003 Governors Awards in Arts Education winners at a special ceremony at the Trenton War Memorial.
"We are very proud of New Jersey's wealth of creative talent and cultural heritage, especially in the arts," Gov. McGreevey said. "These award winners represent the very best our state has to offer. It is a privilege to recognize such success and I wish these talented artists nothing but the best in the future."
The 109 winners 89 students and 20 educators represent the 23rd year of the Governors Arts in Education Awards program, which is sponsored by the DOE and the Alliance for Arts Education/NJ. A list of award winners is attached.
"There is no denying the importance of the arts in every students education," Commissioner of Education William L. Librera said. "Not only do the arts promote diversity and understanding of other cultures, but they can increase self-esteem as well. These winners embody the need to recognize success in all subject areas, including the arts."
The event will begin at 4 p.m. in the War Memorial Building in Trenton, with student performances and a slide show of award-winning visual art.
The awards ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. with remarks by Commissioner Librera, Secretary of State Regena Thomas, State Board Member Sam Podietz and Anthony Migliaccio, president of the Alliance for Arts Education / New Jersey. A reception will be held in the ballroom in the War Memorial following the ceremony.
