State Board of Education Recognizes
Horatio Alger Association Winners from Trenton, Newark

The State Board of Education today honored two New Jersey students who successfully competed for scholarships from the Horatio Alger Association.

Commissioner of Education William L. Librera introduced scholarship winners Arthur Jahmal Callandret from Trenton Central High School, Trenton, and Tiffany D. Douglas from West Side High School in Newark, to the State Board at its regular monthly meeting

"When faced with adversities in their lives, these remarkable students used hard work, perseverance and integrity to overcome them while at the same time striving for excellence in the classroom," Commissioner Librera said.

"It takes a mature and selfless individual who can look beyond his or her own concerns and think about the common good when faced with personal problems," said State Board of Education President Maud Dahme. "Arthur and Tiffany have demonstrated these special qualities by participating in co-curricular activities in school as well as community service activities while coping with formidable obstacles in their lives."

Arthur and Tiffany were among 104 winners who will share in more than $4 million in need-based scholarships offered by the Horatio Alger Association. They were selected from 50,000 applicants nationwide. The Horatio Alger Association is one of the largest privately funded scholarship programs in the nation.
