DOE Co-Sponsors 24th Annual Governors Awards in Arts Education
Today, the New Jersey State Department of Education and Friends of Teen Arts will co-sponsor the 24th Annual Governors Awards in Arts Education at The College of New Jerseys Kendall Hall.
The Governors Awards in Arts Education are designed to promote awareness and appreciation of the arts by recognizing the outstanding arts achievement of students, educators and leaders in New Jersey. Awards will be presented to 25 educators and 89 students. The students were selected by national and statewide organizations for their exemplary work in creative writing, music, theatre and the visual arts. The educators will receive awards from several cooperating national and state arts organizations for their exceptional commitment and contributions to arts education in New Jersey.
In acknowledging the importance of the arts, Commissioner William L. Librera said, "New Jersey has recognized the importance of the arts in our schools by making the performing arts one of the mandated areas of our Core Curriculum Content Standards." "An education in the arts is an essential part of the academic curriculum for the achievement of human, social, and economic growth. We, at the Department of Education, will continue to ensure that the arts are a part of every childs educational experience," added Commissioner Librera.
Shirley Sasor, director of Friends of Teen Arts, said, "Friends of Teen Arts, Inc. is delighted to co-sponsor the Governors Awards in Arts Education this year. Since 1969, our organization has been committed to providing innovative learning and performance opportunities for all New Jersey teenagers in all the creative, fine and performing arts." "We know we can make a positive difference in the lives of teenagers by encouraging self-expression through the arts. The Governors Awards in Arts Education recognize the outstanding achievements of those whose commitment to the arts demonstrates excellence in every way and encourages exploration of the arts in a supportive environment that inspires and nurtures expression," Sasor added.
Award winners will receive medallions from Michael Klavon, director of the Office of Innovative Programs and Schools at the DOE, and State Board of Education Member Roberta Van Anda. The ceremony will also include student performances in music and theatre.
The event will begin at 4:30 pm with a slide show of award-winning visual art. The awards ceremony will begin at 5:00 pm with remarks by Klavon, Van Anda, and Dean of the School of Art, Media, and Music James Lentini.
