DOE Highlights Holocaust Education Awareness

The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) is co-sponsoring an all day conference on infusing holocaust education into middle and high school curricula on Wednesday, December 15, 2004. Entitled "Children Bear Witness," the NJDOE is sponsoring the conference with the Passaic County Community College and the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education. The event will take place at the Passaic County Community College Public Safety Academy, located at 300 Oldham Road in Wayne, New Jersey from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM.

The conference will feature a keynote address by Maud Dahme, a member and former President of the New Jersey State Board of Education. Dahme is a Holocaust survivor who frequently speaks to students and teacher groups, recounting her experiences as a young Jewish girl in Nazi-occupied Holland. She has also served on the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education since 1982. In 1994, she was chosen from a select group of leading American educators who traveled to Poland to learn firsthand about the Holocaust. In 2001, Maud Dahme was awarded the prestigious H. Councill Trenholm Award from the National Education Association at its annual human and civil rights banquet.

Conference participants will also share strategies for infusing Holocaust education into the K-12 curriculum. The conference will provide many hands-on activities, lesson plans and resources designed to enhance instructional knowledge, spur in-depth discussion and encourage reflection. Sessions will include such titles as "Holocaust Across the Curriculum" and "Warsaw Ghetto and Uprising."

The registration fee is $50.00 which is an all inclusive price. Checks and purchase orders may be made payable to "Passaic County Community College" (federal ID #: 22-1907901) and mailed to:
