DOE to Host "Restructuring Middle Grades Classrooms" Workshop

The Department of Education’s Northern Region Office will host a teachers’ workshop, "Restructuring Middle Grades Classrooms," on Thursday, Jan. 20 at the Passaic County Public Safety Academy in Wayne.

The workshop focuses on how teachers can both better educate students in grades four through eight and help them to become self-motivated, independent learners. It is co-sponsored by Passaic County Community College and open to the public.

It takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Academy, 300 Oldham Road, Wayne. The registration fee for the workshop is $75.

The workshop includes keynote presentations by Adele T. Macula, Jersey City’s Associate Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, and Michael Littlejohn, Jersey City’s Public Schools’ director of Whole School Reform in Testing.

Macula began her nearly 30-year career in the Jersey City School District as a teacher. She has served in several key positions in addition to her current role as Associate Superintendent. In that role, she develops, coordinates and oversees the district’s curriculum. She holds a master’s degree from St. Peter’s College and a doctoral degree from Seton Hall University.

Littlejohn began his career more than 30 years ago as an elementary school teacher in Jersey City. He has been a reading specialist and school principal in the district. He holds two master’s degrees, one in Administration and one in Reading Education. He has been Director of Whole School Reform and Testing in the district since 2001.
