State Board of Education Approves New Paterson Superintendent

The State Board of Education today unanimously approved Dr. Michael E. Glascoe as the new Paterson superintendent. Commissioner of Education William L. Librera recommended Glascoe for the post this week.

"Dr. Glascoe comes to us with high qualifications, strong recommendations and a track record of success," Commissioner Librera said.

"Dr. Glascoe is an excellent choice and we on the State Board look forward to working with him and the Paterson School District," said Dr. Arnold G. Hyndman, President of the State Board of Education.

Dr. Glascoe replaces Dr. Dennis Clancy, who has held the Paterson position on an interim basis since last summer. Glascoe, currently an Assistant Superintendent for Educational Accountability in the Fairfax County (Virginia) Public Schools system, will begin working in Paterson on July 1.

Dr. Glascoe began his career as an elementary school teacher in Rockville, Md. in 1972. He spent more than 20 years in the Montgomery County Public Schools system in Rockville as a classroom teacher, guidance counselor, assistant principal and principal.

In 1999, he began working as the Fairfax County Public Schools Area II Superintendent, and, later, as Regional Superintendent in 2000. In 2001, he began working in his current capacity.

As Assistant Superintendent for Educational Accountability, Dr. Glascoe has been responsible for overseeing and fostering minority student achievement, educational planning, program evaluation, and student testing for a district composed of 166,000 students.

Under Dr. Glascoe’s leadership, the school district increased its emphasis on minority student achievement, and saw African-American and Hispanic students increase their participation and success in Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate programs. Additionally, SAT scores increased above the national and state averages.

Dr. Glascoe earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education from D.C. Teacher’s College in 1972. He earned a Master’s Degree in Teaching from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. in 1976. He recently received his educational doctorate from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
