Application Period Now Open for Supplemental Educational Services Providers
Technical Assistance Workshop To Be Held

The New Jersey Department of Education (DOE) has opened a new application period for organizations interested in serving as New Jersey Title I supplemental educational services (SES) providers during the 2007-2008 school year.

Providers who were initially approved in 2003 and 2004 and whose approval will be expiring in 2007 may also submit renewal applications during this time period.

Applications will be accepted until February 28, 2007.  The Notice of Application is available on the NJDOE Web site at www.nj.gov/njded/title1/program/ss/.

SES – additional academic assistance programs for low income students, particularly in language arts and math – are required under the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)

Schools that receive Title I funding and are designated as “In Need of Improvement” because their students do not make adequate yearly progress over a number of years in state assessments must use a portion of their federal money to offer the parents of eligible students the option of receiving SES from a state-approved provider.  The tutoring and remedial programs are made available before school, after school, on weekends and during the summer.

Entities eligible to apply to provide SES include, but are not limited to, the following types of organizations:

  • Community agencies
  • Charter schools (except those identified as in need of improvement)
  • Private schools
  • Individuals
  • Child care centers
  • Public schools (except those identified as in need of improvement)
  • Libraries
  • Community colleges and universities
  • Private companies
  • On-line schools
  • Family literacy programs
  • Faith-based organizations

Applicants must demonstrate a documented record of effectiveness in improving student achievement; provide documentation that the instructional strategies they use are high quality, based upon research and designed to increase student academic content proficiency; and provide evidence that the organization is financially sound.

To assist prospective applicants, DOE is holding four technical assistance sessions to provide information on the application process, the background and provision of SES, and the state’s monitoring and reporting expectations.

The sessions will be held Friday, January 5, 2007 (with a snow date of Wednesday, January 17, 2007) at Middlesex County College, Edison Campus and Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at the Gloucester County Office of Education in Sewell.  Sessions for prospective "new" providers will be from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.  Sessions for providers submitting a "renewal" application will begin at 1:00 p.m.  Attendees must register on-line at http://education.state.nj.us/events

The current list of approved SES providers is posted on the DOE Web site at http://www.nj.gov/njded/title1/program/ss/search.shtml
