Millville High School Students Participate in Toys in Space Project

A team of Millville High School students is participating in Toys in Space, a globe-spanning project that will challenge its skills in invention and marketing.

The team of 15 students will met its counterparts from Magnitogorsk city in Russia, earlier today, via videoconference held in the Luciano Center of Cumberland County College.

Representatives of NASA will assist Toys in Space by presented the project requirements to the students and will evaluate the quality of presentations made by the school teams.  NASA is also considering a possibility of extending the experience in June with a presentation from an astronaut on board the space shuttle while it is in flight.

Toys in Space will use many different academic disciplines and skills to achieve its goals.  Students will learn and use the science behind designing a toy, and about the study of space.  Success in the projects will require students to use problem-solving, collaboration and communication skills.

The project also will provide the American and Russian students with a shared cultural experience as they become acquainted with their projects and with each other.  The teams will share their experiences in a follow-up videoconference on March 29 at the same location.

News media  are invited to attend the March 29 videoconference

The Cumberland County Office of Education is coordinating the activities for Toys in Space.   For more information, contact Cumberland County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Daniel Mastrobuono at 856-455-0211.
