Summer Institute to Enhance School Leadership Skills by Modeling Best Practices
Local school leaders are preparing to participate in an intensive two-day Summer Leadership Institute sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Education. The institute, Educational Leaders Learning from Each Other / The Educational Leader’s Role in Improving Instruction, will be held July 14 and 15 at the Samsel Upper Elementary School, Sayreville.
“The Summer Institute will provide opportunities for veteran and novice administrators to share best practices and strategies in a variety of topics,” said Commissioner of Education Lucille E. Davy. “The program was designed by education leaders for education leaders, and will feature presentations from school administrators currently practicing in New Jersey.
“In our continuing quest to raise student achievement levels and ensure that they have the knowledge and skills they need for success in the 21st century, we need to continually expand our knowledge base by embracing new ideas,” Commissioner Davy continued. Administrators attending the conference will undoubtedly benefit from this mutual sharing of ideas.”
The institute, sponsored by the Department of Education’s Office of Leadership Development, will feature presentations and group discussions about best practices and strategies in: observing instruction; writing and critiquing evaluations; conducting a productive post-observation conference; and correcting instructional practices consistently identified as needing improvement.
Joseph Ferraina, superintendent of schools in Long Branch, will deliver the first-day keynote address on the topic, “How the Observation Process Impacts Student Learning.” Michael Davino, superintendent of the Springfield School District will be the keynote speaker on the second day, cover the topic, “The Importance of the Walk-through Process on Student Achievement.”
Registered participants include superintendents and assistant superintendents, principals and assistant / vice principals, directors, supervisors, department chairs, and district and school leadership teams.
There is no fee for the conference, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Most of the seats are filled, but administrators interested in attending the conference can contact Thomas Gambino, Ed.D at 732-778-5474.
