Social-Emotional and Character Development

The New Jersey Department of Education has been promoting social emotional and character development through a variety of programs and services.  Social emotional and character development (SECD) encompasses the enhancement of school-wide climate, infusion of core ethical values into the curriculum, and teaching strategies that are designed to assist young people develop positive character traits, relationships and behaviors that result in a nurturing environment for students.  SECD is designed to create a climate where youth feel safe and are ready to learn.  Successful infusion of SECD results in positive behaviors, increased academic success and caring communities.
