The utilized Options Publishing Company materials are researched based and support best practices. Options cites, the findings of the National Reading Panel, outlining the importance of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and text comprehension in teaching reading as a foundational influence ( Reading First, Options 2005). We use Just Right Reading Gr. 1-5 Best Practices in Reading Gr. 6-8; and Buckle Down Gr. 2-8. Each provides an instructional framework for integrating multiple reading skills and strategies, as underscored in Put Reading First (Armbruster, et.al. National Institute for Literacy, 2003), Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency (Thinking, Talking and Writing About Reading, K-8 (Fountas & Pinnell, 2006) and The Scholastic Guided Reading Program (Fountas & Pinnell). Tutorial Services has been in business for the past four years. This year alone we have already seen a tremendous improvement from pre-assessment to post assessment results. Last year in Georgia 48% of our students who had failed the state test the previous year had passed this year. During the year of 2008-2009 our students begun the program with an average Language Arts pretest score of 58.3% and the average of the post test score is 65.3%. This would be an average increase of 7%. Mathematics began the year with an average test score of 60.6% and has ended with an average of 72.2%. This would be an 11.6% increase from pretest to post test scores. | |
