Today I had the opportunity to visit the EPIC School in Paramus to kick-off Autism Awareness Month. EPIC stands for Educational Partnership for Instructing Children and is a non-profit school that provides education services for children with autism. At this school, the children are able to learn new skills that will increase the probability of them being more independent adults. I had the pleasure of meeting many of the students, as well as some of their parents and teachers, and I must say I was beyond impressed with the work they do there. Autism is a growing issue both in NJ and nationally and something that I want to bring attention to, as the First Lady. While there is currently no cure for autism at this time, early diagnosis and intensive early intervention in settings such as the EPIC School can provide a more positive outcome for children on the spectrum. In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, we will be lighting up Drumthwacket in blue lights. I will also be involved with a few other Autism related events throughout the month of April. Check back into the website for this upcoming week’s event!
