The First Lady honored Crossroads Theatre Company, of New Brunswick, recognizing the contributions that the theatre has made to the New Jersey community. The mission of Crossroads Theatre Company is to celebrate the culture, history, spirit and voices of the entire African Diaspora, and to present honest and positive portrayals of people of color from around the world. During the program, Mrs. Christie presented Marshall Jones, Producing Artistic Director, with a proclamation from Governor Christie honoring Crossroads Theatre’s Legacy Month. Two young female actors also performed a song for the group. Founded in 1978, Crossroads has produced over 100 works, many of which were premiere productions by the world's leading African and African American artists. In 1999, the theatre company earned a Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre in America. It is the only African American theatre company to be honored with that distinction.
