Today I traveled to Burlington, New Jersey with the Governor and 3 of our children to honor my 8th NJ Hero of 2011, Aidan McManus. Aidan was 5 years old when he saw a homeless man on the street. It was then and there he decided he would dedicate himself to helping those in need. He creates comic books, plans movie night fundraisers, and does various chores to make money to donate to his local soup kitchen, Ladle of Love. Over the past 3 years, he has raised almost $1000! Aidan, now 8 years old, also donates his time working at Ladle of Love on Wednesday's after school, setting tables and serving drinks to their participants. He has a dream of starting his own charity one day, to continue to help those in his community and throughout NJ. Aidan is a real example for the young people of our state. He shows us that no matter how old you are, you can make a difference in people's lives. Aidan's story inspired me and the NJ Heroes Board to go to various NJ companies to ask for food/product donations. Kraft Foods, Unilever, Redco Foods, Post, Campbell's, Pinnacle Foods, Nestle, Bayer Healthcare, Merck, Chef La La, and Domino Sugar donated an incredible amount of products, which we delivered to 5 food pantries across the state, including Ladle of Love on behalf of Aidan. It was great for my family to spend the evening before Thanksgiving giving back to the people who need it the most. A big thanks to Aidan for being such an inspiring New Jersey Hero.
