Some of the most popular players in women's basketball history are from the Garden State. Anne Theresa Donovan, a native of Ridgewood, played on three U.S. Olympic basketball teams during the 1980s, winning the gold 1984 and 1988. Donovan played on a total of 12 U.S. National teams. She was elected to the Hall of Fame.

Carol Blazejowski, a Cranford High School graduate and three time All-America at Montclair State, was one of women's basketball's greatest scorers. Blazejowski set national records for points in a career (3,199) and points in a season (1,235). She averaged 31.7 points per game in her career and 38.6 points in her best season. Blazejowski was captain of the 1980 Olympic team, and she was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1994.

In 1976, Rutgers became the first school in the nation to name a full-time basketball coach for its women's team. Theresa Grentz coached the Scarlet Knights for nearly twenty years. Rutgers was one of the most successful women's teams during that time. Their success has continued under current coach Vivian Stringer. Rutgers reached the Final Four in 2000.

The New York Liberty's Sue Wicks, one of the WNBA's most popular players, first made a name for herself as a star at Rutgers. The WNBA All-Star was named Naismith Player of the Year as the nation's best female college basketball player.
