New Jersey Lung Cancer Research Fund

Lung Cancer Research FundMission Statement
To support innovative research focusing on the causes, prevention,
screening, treatment and cure of lung cancer.

Background

Lung Cancer is the #1 cause of cancer mortality among men & women in NJ and the United States. Annually, approximately 5,900 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed in New Jersey accompanied by 4,100 deaths due to the disease. Your donation to fund Lung Cancer research will help to increase the funds into this research; with 100% of all donations supporting research grants relating to the prevention, screening, treatment and eventual cure of this disease. All donations will be used administered by the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research (NJCCR).

Meeting the Lung Cancer Research Challenge in New Jersey

Citizens now have the opportunity to contribute to the New Jersey Lung Cancer Research Fund through a check-off box on their state income tax form and through Epay. The Fund is administered by the New Jersey State Commission on Cancer Research, which is the only state agency dedicated to eradicating cancer through scientific research. Monies from the NJ Lung Cancer Research Fund support innovative lung cancer research projects, training fellowships, and educational conferences. The legislation was initiated by the New Jersey Lung Cancer Circle of Hope.

Administration of the Fund

The New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research administers the Fund at no additional cost to the State. Through a competitive scientific peer review process, the NJCCR awards monies for research projects focusing "on the causes, prevention, education, screening, treatment or cure of lung cancer and may include, but is not limited to, basic, clinical, and epidemiologic research " (P.L.2009, c.172). Commission sponsored grants assist talented researchers in obtaining additional funding from the federal government, foundations and private sources. On average, for every dollar the NJCCR awards, more than ten dollars are returned to the state for continued research.
