The New Jersey Hospital Care Payment Assistance Program (Charity Care Assistance) is free or reduced charge care which is provided to patients who receive inpatient and outpatient services at acute care hospitals throughout New Jersey. Hospital assistance and reduced charge care are available only for necessary hospital care for those who meet both the income and assets eligibility criteria.
Five-year Trends in Documented Charity Care
Below you will find charts that provide an overview of five year trends in Documented Charity Care, which is an annual summary of the charitable care provided by each acute care hospital.
- The state-wide five year trend beginning in calendar year 2007 reveals an increase of approximately $82 million (9%) in DCC, with a peak of $1.03 billion in Calendar Year 2010. Calendar Year 2011 results indicate that DCC declined statewide by 3.2% ($32.7M) to $995 million.
- Five year trends demonstrate some variability, up and down, for individual hospitals and regions that could be attributed to a number of market and social forces. For example combined counties of Middlesex and Somerset experienced the greatest increase in DCC over those 5 years of approximately $25 million (42.6%).
