The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH), Center for
Health Statistics (CHS) received a grant from the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to create the New Jersey
Violent Death Reporting System (NJVDRS). NJVDRS is a collection
of data from a variety of sources on violent deaths (homicides,
suicides, unintentional firearm deaths, injury deaths of undetermined
intent and deaths by legal intervention). Violent deaths that
occur in New Jersey or New Jersey resident violent deaths occurring
in other states are both included. In addition to our own data
analysis activities, these data will be submitted to the CDC to
become part of the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS),
which is expected to eventually involve participation by all 50
states. The goal of NVDRS is to capture information from multiple
sources in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of violent
deaths. These data will be used to educate public health and public
safety professionals with the ultimate goal of reducing violent
deaths.
Sources of data include Vital Statistics, medical examiner reports,
law enforcement reports, ballistic and crime lab reports and data
from the New Jersey State Police. NJVDRS data will be used to
produce annual reports on violent deaths in New Jersey, GIS maps
of violent death "hot spots," and public use files for
researchers. NJVDRS project staff will also evaluate the quality,
effectiveness, and sufficiency of the data by consulting with
two advisory committees consisting of professionals from law enforcement,
forensic science, public health, and other relevant areas. Copies
of selected advisory committee presentations will also be made
available on this site. CHS’ partner in this project is
the Violence Institute
of New Jersey at the University
of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
