POPULATION

Introduction
Population estimates presented in this report were derived from tables prepared by the Population Division of the U.S. Bureau of the Census. The Census Bureau does not consider these estimates to be accurate for each individual cell and recommends aggregating the individual cells to larger groups when the data are used for purposes of analysis. Estimates are distributed by five-year age groups, sex, and three race groups (white, black, and all other races) for the state and each county (Tables P1-P22). Estimates of the Hispanic population are distributed by ten-year age groups, sex, and county (Table P23). Hispanics may be of any race and are already included in the state and county tables by age, race, and sex. For the first time in this report series, estimates of the Asian and Pacific Islander population are distributed by ten-year age groups, sex, and county (Table P24). Asians and Pacific Islanders are already included in the state and county tables as part of the "other" race group. Population estimates are given for municipalities with 35,000 or more residents in 1998 (Table P25). These are the municipalities listed in the natality and mortality chapters of this report.

Historical Overview
The population of New Jersey has increased more than 330 percent since 1900 (Figure P1). A major reason for this increase is the rise in life expectancy. The percentage of the population aged 65 and over has increased 67.9 percent since 1950 (Figure P2). As of 1998, in every age group over 24, the number of females exceeded the number of males. Females comprised 71.2 percent of the population 85 and over in 1998 (Table P1 and Figure P3). The race composition of the state also changed over the last half of the century. The proportion of the population that is white decreased 14.8 percent, while the black proportion increased 121.2 percent and the other race proportion increased 5,700 percent (Figure P4). Hispanic ethnicity data are not available prior to the 1980 Census, but in the 18 years from 1980 to 1998, the Hispanic portion of the population increased 85.1 percent (Figure P5). The black and other race proportions increased 15.9 and 38.1 percent, respectively, in the same time period (Figure P4).

The Technical Notes section contains information on sources of data and racial and ethnic classification.
