On Thursday, December 22, Commissioner O’Dowd visited Morris Hall, an Assisted Living and Nursing Facility in Lawrenceville, where she joined residents in creating holiday cards for their family and friends.

On December 13, Commissioner O’Dowd visited the NJ Sharing Network to meet with staff, organ recipients and donor families to promote organ and tissue donation. During the visit, the Commissioner met Maria Perez (second from the left), whose son Roberto’s portrait will be part of the Donate Life float in the upcoming Rose Parade. Maria and her husband Carlos chose to donate Roberto’s organs when he passed, which saved five lives. They will travel to Pasadena to see the portrait of their son as part of the float.

World AIDs Day (Dec. 1) raises awareness of the impact of HIV/AIDS. This year's theme is Getting to Zero: Zero New HIV Infections, Zero Discrimination and Zero AIDS Related Deaths. The New Jersey Human Development Corporation, a nonprofit organization of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, sponsored a World AIDS Day education and remembrance event Dec.2 at the Trinity Cathedral in Trenton. Co-sponsors included the NJ Women and AIDS Network, Henry J. Austin FQHC, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, City of Trenton, Trinity Cathedral, Mercer Intervention Services and Hyacinth Foundation.

On November 28, Commissioner O’Dowd joined Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of the Daytime Emmy Award-winning The Dr. Oz Showand cardiac surgeon, to discuss healthy aging with Bergen County seniors. Dr. Oz offered five tips to seniors: keep blood pressure about 115/75, get a half hour of physical activity a day, eat wholesome foods that you love, manage stress effectively and find purpose in life. On November 9, during a visit to Newton Medical Center, Commissioner O’Dowd met with Lisa and Bill Gordon, whose two-month-old son, Dylan, is alive today because of detection and treatment resulting from New Jersey’s first-in-the-nation law requiring newborns to be screened for life-threatening heart defects before leaving the hospital.

On October 19, Commissioner O’Dowd convened a roundtable discussion about how health care providers can increase the number of women who exclusively breastfeed in New Jersey. This event was held at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold, which was one of ten maternity hospitals in the state to receive a DHSS grant to support their implementation of the Baby Friendly Hospitals Initiative.

HealthCorps is a peer mentoring youth nutrition and fitness program, co-founded by heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife Lisa, which is funded by DHSS in three New Jersey high schools – Cliffside Park High School, Central High School in Newark and North Bergen High School.

A unique hospital farmer's market opened this summer on the grounds of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. The Department provides vouchers for seniors and low-income women to have access to fresh produce at 144 farmers' markets throughout the state.
