The Program’s mission is to protect the public’s health by reducing exposures to lead and asbestos hazards. To accomplish this, the Program:

administers a statewide lead and asbestos training program to ensure a trained and competent workforce
provides outreach and technical assistance
conducts oversight and field investigations on lead abatement projects
reviews lead permit applications and issues permits to qualified individuals to perform lead abatement and evaluation activities in NJ
provides oversight on the state asbestos and lead examinations administered by private contractors
assesses exposure and hazard control technologies associated with environmental contaminants.

New Jersey was the first state in the nation to adopt a comprehensive policy which provided a rational, uniform approach to the management of statewide asbestos issues. The Department of Health and Senior Services is the designated state agency for asbestos issues, and is the designated state contact for training and certification.
