While consumers expect HMOs to care for them if they become ill, HMOs can do a lot to help keep their members healthy. There are differences in how easy HMOs make it for people to get care that keeps them healthy and catches their medical problem before it gets serious. Some HMOs, for example, send notices to patients reminding them to get check-ups, shots and regular tests.
