License Renewal

Both the Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) and Health Officer (HO) licenses are annual licenses and expire on December 31 of each year.  Licenses may be renewed upon payment of a renewal fee and upon submission of evidence of completing continuing education credit hours.  Only courses which are sponsored by a Provider Organization approved by this Department will be recognized.  Recognized courses can be found at the New Jersey Learning Management Network.  Participation in meetings of the New Jersey Environmental Health Association and in meetings of the New Jersey Health Officers Association will also provide credits.

Each REHS or HO may renew their licenses as either an active or an inactive license.  However, those individuals who are employed by a local health agency that is recognized by this Department must renew as active in order to perform under the color of their license.

Active licenses shall be issued to those individuals who have successfully acquired at least 15 contact hours of approved continuing education.  An inactive license shall he issued to those individuals who have not acquired the requisite 15 contact hours of approved continuing education.

Renewal Process

Beginning each October 1, it is time to renew Health Officer and Registered Environmental Health Specialist licenses. As of October 1, 2012 the renewal process has changed, bringing licensees expediency and efficiency in processing. License Renewal Applications are now ONLY available online and offer licensees convenient online payment options. The renewal form is accessed via the New Jersey Learning Management Network
(NJLMN).

In accordance with N.J.A.C 8:7-1.11(b)1., the N.J. Office of Local Public Health uses a December 1 deadline for renewal submissions. The 2014 license renewal period will begin on October 1 and end on December 1, 2014. Renewal applications received after December 1 will incur a $25 late renewal fee, in addition to the standard license renewal fee. The standard license renewal fee remains at $50 for each license renewed. The late fee (applied when payment is submitted —online or postmarked-- after December 1) is an additional $25 (for each license renewed).

In order to avoid the late renewal fee, please be sure to submit your renewal application with payment in a timely manner. Please note that processing of renewal forms takes approximately 4 business weeks from the time of receipt of a completed application with appropriate payment.

Active license holders must have obtain 15 CEs to meet the continuing education requirement to renew with an 'Active' status, while ‘Inactive’ license holders are not required to complete continuing education credits. Please be sure to schedule all classes necessary to obtain the required continuing education well in advance of the December 1, 2014 renewal deadline.

All License holders seeking to renew their license must complete the online renewal application. To access the online renewal form, log in on the NJLMN. Once the renewal is completed, the license holder has the choice of how to pay the associated fees for renewing. Easy online payment options are now available and include payment by major credit cards or electronic funds transfer from a checking account.

Those who opt to pay by paper check, money order, or government voucher must complete the online renewal, too, but also must print out a payment stub and include it with their renewal fee(s). Check, money order or government voucher should be made payable to: Treasurer, State of New Jersey. Non-electronic payments should be mailed to: NJ Department of Health, Office of Local Public Health, License Renewal, PO Box 360, Trenton, NJ 08625-0360 and must include the online payment stub.

NOTE: The Department of Health no longer sends a renewal reminder to licensees via US Mail. Instead, a notice will post to the Department of Health website and the NJLMN. Additionally, one mass email reminder will be sent to those who maintain an up-to-date email address in the NJLMN. Please be sure to mark your calendar for the next renewal period (October 1 through December 1) and be certain to maintain an active an updated email address in NJLMN. The online renewal application is conveniently available to all licensees beginning October 1 each year at https://njlmn.rutgers.edu.
