“Blood donations are urgently needed before, during and immediately after the four-day Thanksgiving weekend,” Commissioner Lacy said. “Blood donations typically decline during holiday weekends, but the need for blood persists.” “Please consider donating this weekend and becoming a regular blood donor throughout the year,” he added. A five-day supply of blood is considered adequate. Some blood centers serving the state report that there is less than a one-day supply of Type O blood, which is the most common type and can also be given safely to persons with other blood types. It is frequently used in emergencies when there is not time to determine a patient’s blood type. Last year, Most healthy individuals who are at least 17 years old and who weigh 110 pounds or more are eligible to donate blood. Donors may give blood every two months. Businesses, community groups, schools and religious institutions are urged to support their neighbors and community by organizing blood drives. To schedule a donation, please call one of the blood centers listed below. For more information, visit the department’s web site at www.state.nj.us/health and click on the “Give Blood” icon.
