TRENTON -- As the state and the nation continue to experience severe blood shortages, Health and Senior Services Commissioner Clifton R. Lacy, M.D. today urged New Jersey residents to make time this holiday season to donate blood.

          “Blood donations are urgently needed before, during and immediately after the four-day Thanksgiving weekend,” Commissioner Lacy said.  “Blood donations typically decline during holiday weekends, but the need for blood persists.”

          “Please consider donating this weekend and becoming a regular blood donor throughout the year,” he added.         

          A five-day supply of blood is considered adequate.  Some blood centers serving the state report that there is less than a one-day supply of Type O blood, which is the most common type and can also be given safely to persons with other blood types.  It is frequently used in emergencies when there is not time to determine a patient’s blood type.

          Last year, New Jersey used 64,000 more units of blood than it collected.  The shortfall was made up by acquiring blood from other states.  However, because of this year’s national blood shortage, this may not be possible.

          Most healthy individuals who are at least 17 years old and who weigh 110 pounds or more are eligible to donate blood.  Donors may give blood every two months. 

          Businesses, community groups, schools and religious institutions are urged to support their neighbors and community by organizing blood drives.
