Laboratorians at NJDHSS Public Health Services Branch Saluted During Lab Week

National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (NMLPW), April 20-26, 2008, is a time to honor the more than 265,000 medical laboratory professionals across the nation who perform and interpret laboratory tests that save lives and keep people healthy. Laboratorians work in hospitals, doctors' offices, clinics, research facilities, blood banks, public health laboratories, the armed forces, universities and industry.

Using state-of-the-art technology and instrumentation, laboratory professionals help prevent disease by detecting hidden health problems and help diagnose and treat existing conditions by producing accurate, timely test results. Results of laboratory tests often identify the presence of disease in its earliest stages, when the possibilities of a cure are greatest and treatment is least costly. Vital laboratory results comprise an estimated 70 percent of the patient’s medical records and are essential to the diagnosis and treatment of disease and promotion of wellness.

To celebrate NMLPW, laboratories across the country will host open houses, tours, lectures, and demonstrations to help acquaint the public and other health care professionals with the workings of the medical laboratory.  Laboratorians at the State Public Health and Environmental Laboratories plan to celebrate NMLPW by sharing their expertise with Trenton-area school children on Tuesday, April 22 and honoring the laboratorians on Wednesday, April 23. The program includes keynote speaker, Elissa Passiment, executive director of the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Scientist, who will share her views about the “Professional Value of Laboratorians.”
