State Senior Plan Public Hearings Set
Hearing in Vineland, Toms River & East Orange

TRENTON - New Jersey residents will have the opportunity to provide input and comment on the State's plans for services to senior citizens for the period 2002-2005, when the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, in conjunction with the New Jersey Commission on Aging, conducts three public hearings beginning May 29, 2001.

The public hearings are being sponsored and conducted by the New Jersey Commission on Aging so that residents can review and comment on the proposed three-year State Plan on Aging. The plan is a document states must submit to the U.S. Administration on Aging in order to receive funds under the federal Older Americans Act. The plan outlines the State's proposed goals and objectives in addressing the needs and concerns of older adults age sixty and over in the following areas: housing, caregiving, health promotion, mental health, and life planning.

The first public hearing will be held in Cumberland County at the Center for Health and Fitness, Orchard Road & Sherman Avenue, Vineland, NJ, beginning at 1 p.m. The next two hearings will be held on June 5, 2001 at the Ocean County Administration Building, 101 Hooper Ave, Toms River from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and on June 6, 2001 at Norman Towers, 500 N. Walnut Street, East Orange, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Dr. Thomas Cavalieri, chairperson of the New Jersey Commission on Aging, will preside over the hearings. Persons interested in providing testimony on the plan at the hearings can register for a time slot by calling the N.J. Division of Senior Affairs at 1-800-792-8820. Persons with special needs should inform the division when registering. Written testimony can be submitted at each of the hearings or mailed to the Assistant Commissioner Eileen O'Connor, Division of Senior Affairs, PO Box 807, Trenton, NJ 08625-0807 by June 15, 2001.

An abstract of the State Plan on Aging, along with directions to the site locations, can be obtained by calling the Division of Senior Affairs at 1-800-792-8820, or by contacting the county New Jersey EASE/Area Agencies on Aging at 1-877-222-3737.
