Acting Governor Accepts Grant Resignation

Acting Governor Donald T. DiFrancesco today accepted the resignation of Health and Senior Services Commissioner Christine Grant, effective August 10.

"Chris Grant has worked persistently to increase accessible and high quality health and senior services for the citizens of New Jersey. As Commissioner, she made battling long-standing health concerns like cancer, infant mortality and heart disease cornerstones of her tenure, yet she also played an integral role in the implementation of landmark initiatives in New Jersey. Under her direction, New Jersey has undergone a major expansion of our newborn screening program, the New Jersey Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program is very much up and running - and most recently, my new Senior Gold pharmaceutical program for middle-income seniors was launched," said DiFrancesco.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to serve our citizens," said Grant referring to her role as commissioner. "I am particularly proud to have launched the acting Governor's landmark Senior Gold program which has already enrolled nearly 7,000 participants since it was announced this past May."

"At the start, I said I would focus on four priority areas - tobacco use, racial disparities in health care access and outcome, affordability and quality of health care and the financial health of our health care institutions, and the need for a continuum of choices in long-term care for our seniors," said Grant. "And I have, and we have accomplished a lot, and for this opportunity, I thank the administration and the legislature for its on-going support and commitment to furthering the health and well-being of all residents."

Grant, who was appointed commissioner in April 1999, will become vice president of public policy and government relations at Aventis Pasteur where she will focus on state, federal and international public policy initiatives to protect and improve human health. A global leader in vaccines, Aventis Pasteur is dedicated to improving quality of life.

No decision has been made by the acting Governor concerning her eventual replacement.
