TRENTON
-New Jersey Health and Senior Services Commissioner George T. DiFerdinando,
Jr., M.D., today said his department has issued biological
threat evaluation guidelines for health care providers, who
may be seeing many patients who seek treatment or testing due to
contact with suspicious substances.
The
guidelines feature general information on examining patients who
are seeking treatment, including specific recommendations for patients
with and without known exposure to materials or substances that
have tested positive.
It
also includes guidelines on treating patients if they test positive
for anthrax, how to handle suspicious materials, antibiotic recommendations
and signs and symptoms of clinical anthrax.
Dr.
DiFerdinando said the guidelines and other information on the state's
bioterrorism preparedness and response plan, including physician
information and advice for mail handlers, is available on the department's
website at www.state.nj.us/health.
