New Jersey is implementing a "network of networks" model for statewide health information exchange (HIE). In this approach, health systems, hopsitals, individual physicians, and other providers will connect to their regional health information organization (HIO) in order to exchange health information within their local/regional communities. Each HIO will then connect to the other HIOs by utilizing a thin layer of shared services to be provided by the New Jersey Health Information Network (NJHIN). NJHIN will then serve as the gateway for connectivity to the Nationwide Health Information Network (NwHIN) and to other external parties. The diagram below illustrates the conceptual architecture for New Jersey's model of statewide HIE (last updated Apr. 2012).
The goal of the EHR | HIE Interoperability Workgroup is to create an integrated marketplace of EHR capabilities in which the interfaces between EHRs and HIEs are consistent across multiple states. New Jersey continues to be an active participant in this workgroup.
