Directions to NJ Higher Education

For directions from the Internet... use 20 West State Street, Trenton, NJ  08608-1206 as the destination address, or click on the flag on the map below, enter your starting address and click "GO".

The Commission on Higher Education is located at 20 West State Street (Mary G. Roebling Building), which is one and a half blocks east of the State House at the intersection of West State and Warren Streets indicated by the red push pin on the map.  There are two parking garages (pay) near the Mary G. Roebling Building, indicated by the red and green rectangles on the map above. One is accessed from Chancery Lane (red) and the other from Warren Street (green).  In addition, there are two additional parking garages (brown)a couple of blocks away indicated by the maroon rectangles.  One is on South Warren Street adjacent to the Marriot Hotel, and the other is on the north side of Front Street, between Warrren and Broad Streets.

From Northeast New Jersey via Route 1:

  1. Take US Route 1 South toward Trenton. Just north of Trenton Route 1 splits into 2 roads. Stay to the left (do not use Business Route 1).
  2. Take the Perry Street exit. At the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto Perry Street.
  3. At the fourth traffic light after turning onto Perry Street turn left onto Warren Street.
  4. A parking garage (indicated by green rectangle above) is located on the left at the end of the first block.
  5. If the lot is full...At the second traffic light, turn right onto West State Street.
  6. At the next corner turn right onto Chancery Lane.
  7. One-half block up is a multilevel parking garage (red rectangle on map above) on the left. If garage is full, use the pay lot off Barnes St.

From Northeast New Jersey via the NJ Turnpike:  

  1. Take the NJ Turnpike South to Exit 7A.
  2. Follow I-195 West until it ends, then follow the signs for Route 29.
  3. After passing through a tunnel and two traffic lights, take the Calhoun Street exit.
  4. At the first traffic light turn right onto West State Street.
  5. After passing through a traffic light, turn left at the next corner onto Chancery Lane. One-half block up is a multilevel parking garage (red rectangle on map above) on the left.
  6. If garage is full, use the pay lot off Barnes St. or continue on Barnes Street to Bank Street, turn right, proceed to the first light and turn right onto Warren Street. The other pay garage will be on your left. (green rectangle on map above)

From Northwest New Jersey:

  1. Take Route 31 South to I-95 South to Exit 1 (I-95 and Route 29).
  2. Follow Route 29 South for 5 miles to the Calhoun Street exit.
  3. At the first traffic light, turn right on to West State Street.
  4. After passing through a traffic light, turn left at the next corner onto Chancery Lane. One-half block up is a multilevel parking garage (red rectangle on map above) on the left.
  5. If garage is full, use the pay lot off Barnes St. or continue on Barnes Street to Bank Street, turn right, proceed to the first light and turn right onto Warren Street. The other pay garage will be on your left. (green rectangle on map above)
From Southern New Jersey:
  • If using the NJ Turnpike take Exit 7A and follow the directions from Northeast New Jersey via the NJ Turnpike.
  • If using I-295 North take Exit 60 to Route 29 and follow the directions for using Route 206 North (below) beginning with Route 29.
  • If using Route 206 North
    1. About 4 miles before reaching center-city Trenton take the I-295 exit but, once on the interstate highway, follow the signs for Route 29, not I-295.
    2. After passing through a tunnel and two traffic lights, take the Calhoun Street exit.
    3. At the first traffic light turn right onto West State Street.
    4. After passing through a traffic light, turn left at the next corner onto Chancery Lane. One-half block up is a multilevel parking garage (red rectangle on map above) on the left.
    5. If garage is full, use the pay lot off Barnes St. or continue on Barnes Street to Bank Street, turn right, proceed to the first light and turn right onto Warren Street. The other pay garage will be on your left. (green rectangle on map above)

From the New Jersey Shore:

Take I-195 West, then follow the directions from Northeast New Jersey via the NJ Turnpike.
Directions FROM The NJ Commission on Higher Education

To Northeast Jersey via the NJ Turnpike:
If Parked in the Chancery Lane/Hanover Street Garage

  1. Turn left out of the parking garage onto Chancery Lane.
  2. At the corner, turn left onto Hanover Street.
  3. At the second traffic light turn left onto Calhoun Street. Follow signs for Route 29 South.
  4. After passing through a tunnel, continue on Route 29 until it ends and becomes I-195 East.
  5. Follow I-195 East and take Exit 6 for the NJ Turnpike.
If Parked in the Warren Street Garage  
  1. Turn left onto Warren Street heading south.
  2. At the first light, turn right on West State Street.
  3. At the second traffic light turn left onto Calhoun Street. Follow signs for Route 29 South.
  4. After passing through a tunnel, continue on Route 29 until it ends and becomes I-195 East.
  5. Follow I-195 East and take Exit 6 for the NJ Turnpike.

To Northeast Jersey via Route 1:
If Parked in the Chancery Lane/Hanover Street Garage 

  1. Turn left out of the parking garage onto Chancery Lane.
  2. At the corner, turn left onto Hanover Street.
  3. Turn right at the first corner onto Barnes Street.
  4. Turn right at the next corner onto Bank Street (which will become Perry Street after one block).
  5. After passing 5 traffic lights, you will see a sign for Princeton/New York.
  6. Turn right at the sign onto the ramp which leads to Route 1 North.
If Parked in the Warren Street Garage
  1. Turn left out of the parking garage onto Warren Street.
  2. At the first traffic light, turn right onto Hanover Street.
  3. Turn right at the first corner onto Barnes Street.
  4. Turn right at the next corner onto Bank Street (which will become Perry Street after one block).
  5. After passing 5 traffic lights, you will see a sign for Princeton/New York.
  6. Turn right at the sign onto the ramp which leads to Route 1 North.

To Northwest Jersey:
If Parked in the Chancery Lane/Hanover Street Garage 

  1. Turn left out of the parking garage onto Chancery Lane.
  2. At the corner, turn left onto Hanover Street.
  3. At the second traffic light, turn left onto Calhoun Street.
  4. Immediately after passing the next traffic light, take the exit for Route 29 North on the right.
  5. Follow Route 29 North for 5 miles to the exit for I-95 North.
  6. Follow I-95 North and take Exit 4B for Route 31 North.
If Parked in the Warren Street Garage  
  1. Turn left out of the parking garage onto Warren Street.
  2. At the second traffic light, turn right onto West State Street.
  3. At the second traffic light, turn left onto Calhoun Street.
  4. Immediately after passing the next traffic light, take the exit for Route 29 North on the right.
  5. Follow Route 29 North for 5 miles to the exit for I-95 North.
  6. Follow I-95 North and take Exit 4B for Route 31 North.

To South Jersey:
If Parked in the Chancery Lane/Hanover Street Garage

  1. Turn left out of the parking garage onto Chancery Lane.
  2. At the corner, turn left onto Hanover Street.
  3. At the second traffic light turn left onto Calhoun Street.
  4. Follow the signs for Route 29 South.
  5. After passing through a tunnel, continue on Route 29 until it ends and becomes I-195 East.
    • If using I-295 South, take Exit 60A.
    • If using Route 206 South, take Exit 1A.
    • If using the NJ Turnpike, continue on I-195 East and take Exit 6.
If Parked in the Warren Street Garage  
  1. Turn left out of the parking garage onto Warren Street.
  2. At the 2nd traffic light, turn right onto West State Street.
  3. At the second traffic light turn left onto Calhoun Street.
  4. Follow the signs for Route 29 South.
  5. After passing through a tunnel, continue on Route 29 until it ends and becomes I-195 East.
    • If using I-295 South, take Exit 60A.
    • If using Route 206 South, take Exit 1A.
    • If using the NJ Turnpike, continue on I-195 East and take Exit 6.
To the Shore: Follow the directions to Northeast Jersey via the NJ Turnpike above, but continue on I-195 East instead of taking the exit for the NJ Turnpike.
