NJ’S COLLEGE
ACCESS CHALLENGE GRANT “
TOOLS FOR COLLEGE ACCESS”
FAFSA Completion
Overview:
Encouraging access to higher education has been a longstanding
goal of the Commission on Higher Education and
New Jersey’s colleges and universities.
Obtaining financial aid is a key aspect of access
to postsecondary education. This grant program seeks to assist
needy New Jersey families at the start of the financial aid
process by
helping them to complete the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The Commission on Higher Education
received a federal College Access Challenge
Grant to fund projects at New Jersey higher education institutions.
The Commission is funding pilot programs at 17 New
Jersey colleges and universities to assist families in
completing the FAFSA. These projects will supplement the important
work
already being done by colleges and the Higher Education
Student Assistance Authority in disseminating information
about the importance of filing the FAFSA.
New Jersey’s State
student assistance programs, such as the Tuition Aid Grant (TAG)
program,
rely on filing the FAFSA as the means of applying
for state financial aid. Thus the FAFSA is essential
to obtaining both federal and state aid to attend college. The
grant
program requires that the colleges expand
beyond offering basic information sessions by directly
assisting students and their families in completing and submitting
the FAFSA.
