DDHH and COMCAST Team Up to Bring Digital Captioning to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

As the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) enforces the switch from analog to digital television programming today, Human Services' Division of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DDHH) is partnering with Comcast Cable to ensure that people with hearing loss have access to television captions . A special public Digital Captioning Demonstration is scheduled for July 24 th at the Comcast Cable facilities in Voorhees , NJ .

“Comcast Cable has been exceptionally proactive in working with our Division to outreach the deaf and hard of hearing community,” said David Alexander, Director of DDHH. “Digital broadcasting offers many new features and options including larger fonts and screen placement preferences. These are useful new advancements that are tremendously helpful to our population.”

People who are Deaf and hard of hearing depend upon captions to access the audio information from their televisions.  The partnership between DDHH and Comcast is part of an ongoing endeavor to notify people with hearing loss about digital captioning and to address any concerns they may be experiencing with the reception of these captions.

The Digital Captioning Demonstration meeting will take place at 10 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. on July 24 th at the New Jersey Division of Deaf and Hard of Hearing's quarterly meeting of its Advisory Council. The meeting will be held at Comcast Cable facilities in Voorhees , New Jersey . The educational sessions will be presented by staff from the Comcast engineering department.
