In early April 2006, the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) awarded a 3-year Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Needs and Resources Assessment Grant to DHS's Division of Disability Services (DDS).

Conducting the assessment...
The first part of the grant project involves conducting a comprehensive needs and resources assessment for people with brain injury in the State of New Jersey. This grant gives DDS the opportunity to survey people with brain injury, as well as their families, to determine what needs are not being met by existing resources.

Analysis of available resources...
The project also includes DDS analysis of the resources currently available to people with brain injury, in order to identify gaps in the system. As part of this effort, DDS began its analysis by holding ten separate community forums across the state, which provided a platform for the community to voice their concerns about brain injury services. Click here to read the report.

Updating the State Action Plan...
Once the needs and resources assessment is completed and the results are analyzed, DDS will then review the State Action Plan. The Action Plan will be updated and the Governor's NJ Advisory Council on Traumatic Brain Injury will consider potential changes. Then the new Action Plan will take effect. This new plan will outline the concerns of the TBI community and serve as a starting point for proposed changes to the service delivery system.

To improve the TBI service system, DDS will then develop and fund new projects to address the issues identified by the assessment process and outlined in the State Action Plan. The overall goal is to implement projects that meet these challenges and that help enhance the quality of life for individuals with brain injuries.
