It is estimated that one in five people nationwide, and approximately 1.75 million New Jersey residents have a disability that potentially limits his/her physical or cognitive functioning.
The Division of Disability Services (DDS) was established in 1997 with the intention of bridging the gap to services for those with adult onset disabilities-- disabilities occurring later in life as a result of injury or illness. During its tenure, DDS has evolved into a single point of entry for disability-related information.
INFORMATION AND REFERRAL SERVICES ( I & R)
Through its toll free hotline, 1-888-285-3036, DDS responds to as many as 15,000 requests each year for statewide Information and Referral Services. Certified Information and Referral Specialists are available to confidentially discuss issues, provide information, assist with problem solving, and to refer individuals to appropriate agencies or services. Also, effective July 1, 2014, DDS became the lead agency in NJ to screen children, 17 years old and under, for Managed Long Term Services and Supports (MLTSS).
