Through a Social Services Block Grant, DDS is administering a program to replace, repair, or build a modular ramp for individuals whose primary residence was impacted by Superstorm Sandy. Stair glides or vertical platform lifts are also available where ramps are not deemed feasible.

Please Note: This program is no longer accepting new applicants, as funding has been exhausted.

DESIGN INFORMATION

Modular Ramps:

  • Have no permanent footings, making them easy to install, remove, and replace as necessary.
  • May be made of aluminum, steel, wood, or fiberglass.
  • Can be customized to meet the needs of each application and his/her home.

Vertical Platform Lifts:

  • Have a flood sensor mechanism to stop the function of the lifts in the event of flooding.
  • Have pumps and controllers located above the Base Flood Elevation, where possible.
  • Are made of corrosion resistant material.
  • Have a manual and/or battery back-up to be used in the event of a power failure.

CATEGORICAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPLICATION
  • A ramp was damaged during the storm and needs to be repaired or replaced
  • A ramp is needed in a home or apartment to which a person with a disability has relocated as a result of the storm
  • An existing ramp can no longer be used because a home has been elevated to comply with new building codes

ELIGIBILITY

• Reside in New Jersey

• Have a permanent disability that requires a ramp or stair lift, where feasible, to access the home. Physician certification of disability and need is required.
