For additional information on the following New Jersey Medicaid programs, call 1-800-356-1561 or contact your appropriate local office.
1. New Jersey Medicaid for Children under the Age of One
Children under the age of one who meet the general eligibility and financial eligibility requirements for New Jersey Medicaid are covered by the program. A child born to a woman eligible for and receiving Medicaid is guaranteed eligibility for one year regardless of any change in circumstances, so long as the child continues to reside with the mother.
Income eligibility for this program is based on 185 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. Income for everyone living in the household, including parents, is considered, although other financial resources are not. Eligible children are entitled to all Medicaid benefits.
2. New Jersey Medicaid for Children under the Age of 6.
Children under the age of 6 may qualify for full New Jersey Medicaid benefits even though the adults in their family do not because higher family income limits apply for these children.
3. Medically Needy Segment of New Jersey Medicaid for Children Under the Age of 21.
This special program provides limited health coverage to children under the age of 21 who do not qualify for regular New Jersey Medicaid because their family income or financial resources are too high. It includes a so-called "spend down" provision that allows documented medical expense to be used to reduce monthly income to meet eligibility limits.
Children who qualify for this Medically Needy section of New Jersey Medicaid are entitled to most Medicaid services except for inpatient hospital care.
4. Medicaid Special program for Children Under Age 21
Children under the age of 21 who do not qualify as a dependent child for the New Jersey Medicaid program offered to children under 18 and their families, whether or not they reside with their parents, are covered so long as they meet the program's general requirements. Family income and resources for all family members residing in the same household are used to determine financial eligibility.
