Record Number of Schools to Participate in
Third Annual New Jersey High School Consumer Bowl

NEWARK -- A record number of 45 New Jersey high schools representing 18 counties will compete in the Third Annual New Jersey High School Consumer Bowl in a test of their knowledge of consumer issues, Attorney General Peter Verniero and New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs Director Mark S. Herr announced today.

Similar in format to old game shows such as "It's Academic" and the "College Bowl," the competition pits teams of high school students against each other, first in county, then regional and, ultimately, the state finals, which will be held on March 9 at the Richard J. Hughes Justice Complex in Trenton. The number of participating high schools this year is up from 13 last year and eight in 1997, the year the Division of Consumer Affairs began sponsoring the statewide competition.

"Through this program, we're helping students learn in a fun setting what their rights are, not only as New Jersey citizens, but as New Jersey consumers," Verniero said. "We are pleased that so many schools are participating in this worthwhile project and that almost every county in the State will be represented."

"The Consumer Federation of America estimates that teenagers spend nearly $80 billion annually nationwide and significantly increase their purchases when they leave high school," Herr said. "At the same time, the United States Justice Department estimates that Americans 18 to 34 are the largest cohort of Americans to be victimized by fraud."

The county competitions, which started this week, are scheduled to continue through this month and February. The winners of the county competitions will progress on to regional rounds February 8, 9 and 10, to determine which schools will represent their respective regions (northern, central or southern) in the state finals.

Each team consists of four students, an alternate and a teacher/advisor.

The State champions will win a trophy for their school and each team member will receive a gold medal and a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.

The members of the team that captures second place will each receive a $75 U.S. Savings Bond and silver medal. Third place winners will each receive a bronze medal and a $50 U.S. Savings Bond.
