“You Drink and Drive, You Lose.”
Statewide Crackdown on Impaired Drivers Enters its Second Week of Enforcement

(Pennsauken) - Police statewide are continuing their unrelenting crackdown on impaired drivers as the Labor Day weekend fast approaches, marking the end of the summer travel and vacation season. Law enforcement is taking a zero tolerance approach as New Jersey joins the national “You Drink and Drive, You Lose.” effort. The campaign began on August 19th and will continue through Labor Day, September 5th. The two-week period is among the deadliest for DWI crashes in the Garden State and the nation, where 17,000 people die annually as a result of impaired driving.

Safety officials and law enforcement joined Attorney General Peter C. Harvey and Division of Highway Traffic Safety Director Roberto Rodriguez at Route 73 and Remington Avenue in Pennsauken this morning to reinforce the DWI message for Central and South Jersey.

“As we approach the Labor Day Weekend, law enforcement officers statewide are enhancing their efforts to target and apprehend impaired drivers,” said Attorney General Peter C. Harvey. “Motorists are reminded never to drink and drive. The risks you take are great and the consequences are severe.”

“On a national level, fatalities in alcohol-related crashes have decreased,” said Roberto Rodriguez, Director of the NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety. New Jersey has historically been several points below the national average. This shows that drivers are getting the all important “You Drink and Drive, You Lose.” message. The entire focus is on reducing injuries and fatalities caused by impaired drivers.”

The Division has awarded 102 grants to police agencies statewide to conduct DWI checkpoints and patrols over the two-week crackdown period. However, 230 police departments are showing their dedication to eradicate drunk drivers from New Jersey’s roadways by participating in the campaign without grant assistance, for a total of 332 police agencies throughout the state.

As the Summer season winds down in New Jersey, the Division advises you to be responsible and don’t risk it...you will be caught if you drink and drive. If you plan to drink, choose a designated driver. If you’re on the road, report impaired drivers by calling #77 on your cell phone. And always buckle up, it’s your best defense against an impaired driver. By all means, enjoy the rest of the summer. And don’t drink and drive, because of “You Drink and Drive, You Lose!”
