NJ Troopers Arrest Florence, NJ Man
for Murder of Woman
Victim found on an athletic field in Southampton, N.J.
MOUNT HOLLY - Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi and Colonel Rick Fuentes, New Jersey State Police Superintendent, announced today that a Florence, N.J. man has been charged with the murder of a 22-year-old Westville, N.J. woman whose body was discovered yesterday morning in Southampton, N.J.
Stephen Headley, age 28, of 584 Station Road, Florence, N.J., was charged with Murder. Bail was set at
$750,000 with no 10 percent option by the
Hon. Barbara Villano, J.S.C. of the Burlington County Superior Court.
Headley is charged with killing Nicole Ayres, 22, of Westville, Gloucester County. Her body was discovered on a pathway leading to a municipal athletic field complex on Buddstown Road in Southampton Township on the
morning of Monday, September 13, 2010. An autopsy performed by Burlington County Medical Examiner Dr. Ian Hood revealed that she was been stabbed multiple times about the head, neck and back.
The murder is believed to have occurred in the early morning hours of Monday, September 13, 2010.
On the evening of September 13, 2010, Stephen Headley asked his grandmother, a resident of Medford
Township, to drive him to his mother’s house in Pemberton Township because he wanted to meet with the two of them. During that meeting with his mother and grandmother, he fled the house and ran into the road, where he was hit by a pickup truck. Emergency personnel and State Police responded to the scene of the accident. Headley was airlifted to Capital Health System, Fuld Campus in Trenton, N.J., where he is being treated for a fractured back, two fractured ankles and multiple fractured ribs. He will have a first appearance in Burlington County Superior Court upon his release from the hospital.
Several components of the case remain under investigation. As such, no further information will be released
The case was investigated by detectives from the New Jersey State Police Major Crimes Unit and Red Lion
Barracks, with assistance from the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, Deptford Police Department, Florence Township Police Department, Medford Township Police Department and Pemberton Township Police Department.
All persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
