Find an Inspection Facility
State Inspection Station – There are 26 of these state facilities that are operated by a contracted vendor. Owners may present their vehicles for inspection during normal business hours. No fee will be charged.
Private Inspection Facility (PIF) – There are approximately 1,100 privately-run garages licensed to conduct vehicle inspections on behalf of the State of New Jersey. Inspections are conducted for a fee determined by the individual operator.
Specialty Inspection Station – There are three state-run facilities (Asbury Park, Westfield and Winslow) that conduct inspections by appointment only for salvage, high-rise, kit cars and other special vehicles. Referee inspections are also conducted at these sites.
Emissions Repair Facility (ERF) – These are licensed garages that may conduct any type of emissions-related repairs if a vehicle is failed during an inspection. Repairs are made for a fee determined by the individual operator.
Diesel Private Inspection Facility (DPIF) – There are approximately 300 privately-run garages licensed to conduct diesel emission inspections on heavy-duty diesel-powered vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating over 18,000 lbs on behalf of the State of New Jersey. Inspections are conducted for a fee determined by the individual operator.
