Christie Administration Announces New Skip the Trip Driver’s License and ID
Mail Renewal Service for New Jerseyans
New Process Allows Customers to Eliminate Visits to an Agency

(SPRINGFIELD) – Continuing efforts to bring greater convenience to New Jersey residents, the Christie Administration today announced that the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) is poised to begin processing driver’s license and non-driver ID renewals by mail. Beginning with documents that expire in November 2012, customers born on or before December 1, 1964 will be able to Skip the Trip to an agency and renew through the mail. Eligible customers will begin receiving Skip the Trip notices this month.

“The MVC has kept a sharp focus on its performance goals, and most importantly, the needs of its customers,” said Governor Chris Christie. “A more convenient renewal process is exactly what customers have been calling for and Skip the Trip delivers.”

By directing millions of customers to mail renewals, the MVC will further reduce agency traffic. Over the last few years, the MVC has taken a number of steps to improve service and increase efficiency at its agencies. From extended service hours and employee cross-training to additional part-time staff and expanded camera stations, the MVC has embarked on an aggressive campaign to reduce wait times and better manage customer volumes at all agencies statewide with specific attention on a handful of typically busier sites.

“We’ve seen the positive effect that our previous changes have had on agency wait times. Skip the Trip will take that to the next level,” said MVC Chairman and Chief Administrator Raymond P. Martinez. “It’s our desire to make it easier for customers to securely renew their documents without the need to come see us every time.”

Skip the Trip customers are only required to mail back their renewal notice along with payment and within 7 to 10 days they will receive a new, four-year document without the need to present 6 Points of Identification. This is possible because of enhanced MVC security procedures that utilize state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to confirm eligible customers’ identities prior to mailing a renewal notice. Customers who are offered the chance to renew by mail and choose to visit an agency instead will be required to present six points.

Although many customers will receive the Skip the Trip notice, there are some instances where mail renewal is not permitted. Customers with a Commercial Driver License (CDL), Graduated Driver License (GDL), Temporary Visa Restriction (TVR), interlock device, boat license or suspension are not eligible for mail renewal and must visit an agency.
